The American policy towards the development of the Caspian oil and natural gas industry seeks the total exclusion of Iran and the promotion of Turkey as the provider of the main export route. This has proven to be incompatible with the Caspian region's political and economic realities. Turkey's strategic value sometimes comes under doubt. But Turkey is an important route for the export of oil from northern Iraq. By binding the Caucasus region with the West through the BTC, Turkey is now a key country in accessing the energy sources of the landlocked Caspian Basin.

Responsibility: Gareth M. Winrow. Taking the discussion well beyond issues of pipeline politics and the significance of Caspian oil and gas to the global market, the book offers significant new findings concerning the impact of energy wealth on the political life and economies of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan/5(2).
This book highlights the importance of Turkey in diversifying supplies in future European energy security, focusing in particular on the rapidly emerging southern energy corridor.
Turkey, by its location, occupies a key role in this corridor, fed by hydrocarbon supplies from Russian, Caspian, east Mediterranean and Arab sources. TURKEY’S OBJECTIVES IN THE CASPIAN REGION Turkey is one of the most important potential markets for the oil and gas pro-duction of the Caspian region and Russia.
Its need for energy has been increas-ing rapidly and will continue to do so if the present rate of economic growth is to be sustained. Russia also possesses infrastructure to bring energy resources from the Caspian into Russia. Turkey is, therefore, more likely to compete with Russia for the transit of Caspian exports than to become its energy transit route.
Adding to Turkey’s disadvantage is the fact that it is largely dependent on Russia for its own natural gas imports. The Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Natural Gas Pipeline, which aims to supply natural gas produced from the Shah Deniz field in the southern Caspian Sea region of Azerbaijan to Turkey, was realized under the Turkey-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Agreement signed on 12 March Caspian Energy Inc.

Book Description: The Caspian region has a wealth of crude oil and natural gas. Turkey aspires to be a key player in transporting oil and gas from the Caspian area to world markets.
This hope is challenged by commercial and regional issues, terrorist threats, and the potential for disruption of tanker traffic in the Bosporus.

The Iraq War, Turkey, and Renewed Caspian Energy Prospects Paul A. Williams and Ali Tekin Many have linked the US-led invasion of Iraq to its oil resources, leading some observers to question Caspian energy prospects.
This article analyzes how the Iraqi occupation and Caspian oil prospects have been inter-linked, via the evo. Given Turkey’s embargo of Armenia and the war with Azerbaijan, Armenia effectively has no other choice but to depend on Russia for its energy.
These facts makes energy a vulnerability for Armenia but also an opportunity for the creative future use of Caspian energy, provided that some government is willing to invest in peace in the Caucasus even if the energy.
